Further Help

Update (May 12th, 2006): If you are using a router to access the internet, have a look at this article on increasing a setting called the MTU. It has worked for a few others and I am interested to see how many more people it can help.

If you are still having problems after trying the steps above, take a look at a similar post at the Messenger Support Space, it has a few additional steps like above that may help.

Still not working? Try creating a new topic about it on the Messenger support forum and get direct help from other forum users (you will need to register first). Do this instead of posting a comment here asking for more help, it is much easier to respond on the forum (and more people will see it).

I’ve been reading for days how to solve this problem. I am pretty sure it has something to do with the wireless router, but I can’t fix it! I’ve done EVERYTHING! Please, if anyone knows what I can do (other than updating the .dll, checking the firewall, time, etc.). It works fine when I don’t use the Wireless Router. All the other programs work fine. I can surf through the net, etc., it’s just MSN Messenger.

These options did not work, however I have some digging to do yet. I let my friend get loose on my laptop and install a bunch of anti-spyware and windows maintenance programs to clean up the registy - he may have blocked that paticular .dll. I will have to look into it, but at least now I know what to look for…

Any hints on IE not bringing up Secure Connections (Bank Of America, Etc. Etc.)?

  37. 37 RobSwe

None of the above mentioned tips helped me but this really worked!

If u r using Norton antivirus the problem can be that the firewall is blocking the connection via the Rule “Block access to secure sites”..
Open Norton Internet Security > Personal Firewall > Configure > Advanced > General > find the Rule “Block access to secure sites” and modify the rule to “Allow”.

If u dont want to change the rule without being 100% sure that actually is the problem u can always check the NIS log-file to make sure.
Open Norton Internet Security > Norton antivirus > Detailed status > Reports > View activity log and then the Firewall option.

  38. 38 Medve

It did not work for me, also.
    I think it’s Windows XPx64 edition’s weakness.

  39. 39 Ebrost

    it isn´t work yet.

  40. 40 Dj CrAz3

i changd ma tim n it workd fnxx

  41. 41 Gekko

I hate this! Nothing is working. I have tried all the suggestions everyone has said on this page, over and over, and my time is correct! 9:02 PM April 14 2006! It is correct! I have done all the other suggestions, but it still doesn’t work! I put in my password, nine letters, and it changes it to eight and gives me error 80048820 all over again!

  42. 42 sen

i tried all of these things.. downloaded clocktime with “atom-time”, reinstall drivers for gfx, network and sound, cleaning with hand my registry and.. deleted msn completly and reinstall it. i checked my router, all correct.
internet explorer/firefox settings correct, nothing wrong.

still 80048820 - but.. i can connect to MSN Messenger with browser, so it can’t be a server problem or my comp. i think its a software problem. (typical for m$ :D)..

  43. 43 RobT

nothing working! My new wireless router is now apparently stopping me accessing my bank and MSN money! :-(

  44. 44 janni

tnx - i set the clock/date and now it works :D

  45. 45 michelle

HELP tried all the above and still no luck this has only happened since I installed a wireless router aaaahhhhhhh!!!!!!!

  46. 46 sen

i found a solution, for all people where the time/firewall help didnt works.

i will translate it now to english, let it check my old english teacher if all is correct and send it M$ that they can put it in her help files.

  47. 47 Adrian L

    I’m having same problem.
    Running on AZTECH WL730RT4
    and Linksys ADSL2MUE Modem.

If I connect my laptop directly to my WIFI router LAN port, it works. It even works in my office’s WIFI.
BUT..if I connect via WIFI back home with my AZTECH Wireless Router, then it wouldn’t connect.
I’m getting a “Default Gateway Appears Offline” crap also.

    Tried EVERYTHING..from Re-registering DLLs to synchronising clocks..all doesn’t work.

  48. 48 Gekko

I fixed it! All of you who haven’t yet, and who know you have the correct time, when you try to sign in, watch. Does it change the amount of characters in your password? It always changed mine to eight. So I made my password eight characters, and I can sign in!

  49. 49 Nikki

guys if u have a wireless connection i think this problem is something to do with that! Mine worked for months and then all of a sudden it stopped and im sure its somethin to do with the router! anyone got any tips?

  50. 50 strikermatt

i also get my password becoming short as i try to log on…then it comes up with the message

  54. 54 Beth

I have tried the proxy settings and everything stated above but nothing worked… i think it must be a firewall setting… but how do i check it?? i need help! this is driving me crazy!

  55. 55 Nikki

strikermatt i have the same problem and my windows messenger does work but web messenger wont

  56. 56 chocoblock

  57. 57 Adrian L

Okay, I got mine fixed too, in a odd way that u may think.
For my Windows XP, I went to MSN Messenger site, downloaded the MSN Messenger 7.0 copy for Windows 2000, uninstalled the 7.5..and reinstalled with that 7.0

And now it’s all working fine..with all the 7.x features still there.

My password is 11 characters long.So maybe I am affected, but couldn’t be my password problem (as mentioned above about ‘it works in my office’ etc.)

omg, none of those things helped me. my msn messenger, web messenger, windows messenger, or hotmail will not work.
    PLEASE help me =(

  61. 61 Nadia

tried the whole thing, did not work. Read somewhere that hotmail requires static ip versus dynamic. When tech support helped me configure the router they had me change ip to dynamic. Can that be the problem and how do I fix it? Also I am curious how come I can login to my page in MSN but cannot access neither messenger, nor hotmail nor any of the news articles on my MSN page???

    Please if you can help!!!!!

  62. 62 syed

  78. 78 Andrea

Where on earth can you find a copy of the 7.0 version???? I only want to check my e-mail! Why do they force you to upgrade to programmes that don’t work properly!

  79. 79 Arien

You’re soooooooooooo my idol! Than you very much!

  80. 80 Sarah

ya none of this worked for me :( its relle annoying too cuz i can’t check my email either! urrrr! i’ve chacked everything in here and the messenger help thing, nothings working! plzzzzz help! :(

  81. 81 Sarah

thnx Gekko! it does keep changing it to 8 letter instead of 6, now it won’t go let me change my password lolz

  82. 82 Adrian L

Hi Michelle, glad I helped you as a helpless soul.

Okay, anyone facing Hotmail login problems ? I think the loginnet.passport.com server is down for days…I can’t check my Hotmail.
If I am not mistaken, MSN Messenger too uses Passport.com servers (not sure whats the exact addresss) to authenticate it’s users before connecting to MSN Messenger and Hotmail.Try ping-ing loginnet.passport.com and it wouldn’t return back the packets..or even simpler..try login into Hotmail.
That server has been down for days I think. I think MSN people are trying to cover up their wrong doings.

For those who think it’s either
    - Date is wrong (yeah..sometimes does help, but my date and time is correct, so it doesn’t help me there). I see some people have wrong time and date, changing it seems to help them, due to fussy MSN servers needing correct time for “security” reasons - WHY must be correct time, Microsoft?
    - IP address should be Dynamic Ip - Heck my office wired LAN is Static and I have no problem with that also.
    - Firewall - I’ve tried turning off Windows Firewall, doesn’t help. Turned off my own set of software-based firewall, doesn’t help either.
    - Password shorten - Maybe I should try that in MSn 7.5 , but if my same number of characters work in 7.0, I don’t see why it can’t work all a sudden in 7.5.

    My 2 cents of opinion

  83. 83 Adrian L

    Andrea (and others)
    Goto http://messenger.msn.com/Download

    i) On the bottom of the Screen , you will see “Change Operating System” OR..better still copy this link:

    http://messenger.msn.com/download/os.aspx

ii) Select: MSN Messenger 7.0 for Windows 2000 (basically because Windows 2000 and XP share the same NT OS engines)…then Click OK.

Then you have a choice of either “Download and Install Later ” OR Download Now (with ActiveX plugin).

The difference between 7.0 and 7.5 so far I noticed, is the Login page only..the rest is still the same.

  84. 84 Naomi

Did not work for me and would really like to carry on using msn . If anyone can help let me no thanx. pinx

  85. 85 scott

Itried all of above apart from the last one because the website will not load. I also cant get onto any microsoft websites.

I’ve been having this problem too. The fixes mentioned didn’t work for me. I turn my anti virus off then connected to messenger and then turned my anti virus back on. It worked a treat. Hope it works for you. Give it a try. don’t forget to turn your av back on though.

    Hello, all.
I tried to follow the instructions above, but it did not work. But I got it all to work by setting the DATE and TIME settings right (Control Panel -> Date and Time). My date was set to some date in january 2002. By setting the date to today, it all worked better.

I hope this will solve your problems as well.

    Cheers!

    Thanks! Worked like a Charm!

I have some fantastic news for those that have tried the above and nothing worked…. after weeks and weeks of frustration this is what we eventually discovered.

This is for people using a DLINK Wireless Router with a DI524 model number. Change the MTU Setting to 1400 (this is under the WAN setting)

I dont know much about Wirless so im not the best at explaining things but by the looks of it this MTU setting can effect communication with certain programs.

Hope this helps at least one person out there in the big bad world. Well im off to keep on chattin on MSN woooohooooo!!!

  138. 138 robyn

everyone who have tried EVERYTHING!! to sort out their msn and have a netgear wireless router, try this
    1. open internet explorer and type in ur ip adress
    http://192.168.0.1
    2. log in with username “admin” and the password shud b set to “password” automatically
    3. on the left hand side go down to the bottom where it should say WAN settings
    4. change ur WAN settings 1400 instead of 1454 or wotever it may be and it should work. good luck!!

  139. 139 robyn

sorry its the MTU size on WAN setup, change that to 1400

  140. 140 Martin

Thanks Shane !!! … I forgot i’d played with my settings to try to get 8MB broadband set up properly … consequently my news server and MSN crapped out . MUCH APPRECIATED !!!

  141. 141 Eduardo

thanks alot! you saved my life =p

  142. 142 Gino

Hello, all these solutions didn’t work for me, but i can resolve and re-create this problem. MSN (7.5) was working normally until Windows Update installed update http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=900485. After this update I receive this error. If i go back with System restore, before this update, the problem will dissapear. So non of these solutions are working for me, just this update is the cause (for me !)

  143. 143 Arshley

    robyn
Have followed your step, still can not work! what should i do???

  144. 144 Pearl Charaxes

It was the date that was hasseling for me. I set the date correct, the time aswell as I unchecked the box on “internet-time”.

    Thanks for the help guys!

  145. 145 embey

changed my mtu from 1492 to 1400 on wan router IT WORKS ,I HAD JUST CHANGED TO A STATIC ISP

  146. 146 gary

Been having this problem since May 1. I was online not downloading or doing anything specific. My msn automatically logged off and since I have not been able to get onto msn or hotmail. Not having made any changes to anything how can this happen? Is there anyway this is a hotmail problem as opppossed to our own hardware/software? I have a Netgear router but I can’t see how this could be a problem as it was fine before. This is driving me nuts!

    Any alternate suggestions?

  147. 147 NOWhappyMSNuser

    –wireless router user here–
have been able to solve the problem in 2 ways:
    1.install msn 7.0 or
    2.change MTU setting to 1400

this article has been extremely useful, thaks all for the help

  148. 148 Phil

Installed 7.5 yesterday and it just ain’t working despite trying many of the suggestions on here… uninstalled 7.5 through Control Panel, downloaded 7.0 from oldversion.com, this is the link:

    http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=msnm

Download and run the install for 7.0 and everything’s back to normal! :)

  149. 149 Bizzle

WORKED LIKE A CHARM, oops, caps.

  150. 150 Justin

You may also want to try in IE going to tools, internet options, andvanced then use
TSL 1.0, none of the above worked for me, this did.
    Regards and good luck

  151. 151 Lepper

    My life is shit.
    I’m a piece of cake… it didn’t work.
    Thanks anyway!!
PD: I’m using a router, but it is not firewaled nor nothing…

  152. 152 Melina

ok im still having problems with msn and windows messenger but i got qnext and it lets me log in even tho i cant change my msn name and picture so thats good to use without wasting bandwidth on web messenger, which u can also try.

so go to web messenger. or get qnext i suggest if it refuses to work like mine.

as for people who cant get into hotmail… mine stopped working about a year ago in internet explorer same time as msn stopped. i downloaded firefox and i have been able to accessmy internet ever since :)

i still want to fix msn tho even if i can log in

  153. 153 PsyCHZZZ

Hi guys… I also found out that on the Clock page there’s a tab that says “Internet Time” and it’s synchronizing with time.windows.com.

I just unchecked the Automatically sync… and did the rest of the stuffs on the post and it worked for me.

    Yay!

  154. 154 Teggro

I have tried everything on this list and a couple others. Wat happened to me is that msn never worked on my computer yet it worked on a different computer on my network that uses the same firwall Microsoft McAfee Firewall Plus. I thought it had something to do with firewall that is built in to my router which i have been told by someone was possible yet it started working a couple of days ago and worked fine for about 36 hours it then stopped working again. I think it has something to do with the fact that my computer started doing windows updates which it has never done before although it has been setup to do them automatically for about a year. I cant explain how irritating this is for and if anyone could get back to me with further suggestions then i would be very happy. My Email is Matthewruss05@aol.com

I faced the same problem of error code 80048820, all measues have been taken but still i can not login. EXCEPT ONE MEANS:
I tried my account and password of MSN Messenger on another computer, everything was working fine. Then i requested another account&passowrd from my friend to login on my laptop–same MSN Messenger, It was working properly, after that, I again use my own same account and password on same software———
    Problem solved!

  156. 156 ScottK

Well, it looks like we’re STILL having problems. The Odd bit is that WLM 8 is now experiencing the nefarious 80048820, but now with an “Extended Error Code” 80048439.

I can ABSOLUTELY prove that it’s Microsoft’s fault on this part; It’s very simple, really.

Note: everyone who is experiencing this problem is on broadband and not dial-up - it’s due to the world-wide default on the TCP/IP Protocol’s “Maximum Transfer Unit (MTU)” setting of 1500. It can’t be a code change on MSN 7.X because us Windows Live Messenger users are also experiencing the problem; hence, it must be with the new Live ID service that won’t handle packet sizes greater than 1400 (the aformentioned change in MTU values).

My son and I were wracking out heads tonight trying to figure this out (it’s a good experience in troubleshooting for him, and an opportunity for good-old Dad to show that he still knows a thing or two ), and applied all of the suggestions posted here and on Fanatic.net to no avail, with the exception of changing the MTU settings . I simply changed the MTU setting in my Netgear 10/100 Router from 1500 (the world-wide default) to 1400, and WLM 8 works like a charm.

So, as far as the other suggestions, PLEASE take this one FIRST - It’s infinitely simpler than doing the “regsvr32″ dance, and much more reliable. Using the regsvr32 re-loads should’t hurt anything.

I have tried all the methods mentioned expect installing the old version, it does not work.

I have changed the MTU to 1400, it does not make any effect. My DLINK Wireless Router is DI514.

Hope the further discussion, thank you, I would pay attentation it.
